VICTORIA, BC: Brennan Day, MLA for Courtenay–Comox, is calling on the BC government to immediately reverse its decision to cut off life-enhancing treatment for nine-year-old Charleigh Pollock, whose seizures stopped entirely after beginning Brineura therapy.
“This decision is not backed by science, compassion, or common sense,” said Day, speaking from Tofino Hospital in the Minister of Health Josie Osborne’s own riding. “The government’s review was inconclusive. It didn’t answer the only question that matters: is Charleigh still benefiting from Brineura? The answer from doctors, real-world evidence, and her family is yes.”
New data showing ongoing therapeutic benefit was excluded from the government’s internal review, and the criteria used to end Charleigh’s treatment were based on outdated 2018-era standards, long outdated thanks to evolving international medical research.
“No other country has pulled Brineura from a child showing benefits from the drug,” said Day. “This is not just a health policy failure, it’s a looming constitutional crisis. Mark my words, a Charter challenge is coming, and this government could end up defining healthcare rights for a generation.”
Brennan Day added that the review process was “deeply flawed,” with the EDRD panel operating under PHSA direction, an agency that has lost the public’s trust.
“BC has the opportunity to lead with compassion and integrity on rare disease care,” said Day. “Instead, we’re breaking new ground in cruelty.”
A Friday meeting with Jori, Charliegh, and Batten disease experts with Health Minister Josie Osborne is expected. The family and advocates are urging the province to reconsider their decision.
