Steve Kooner serves as the BC Attorney General Critic, Conservative Caucus Leadership Team Lieutenant for Stakeholder Relations, and the MLA for Richmond-Queensborough.
Steve is a long-time lawyer who was called to the British Columbia Bar in 2006 and who holds a Juris Doctor law degree from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Simon Fraser University.
Steve started his law firm just 2 months after being called to the BC Bar, and he made it well known; he received legal service awards, including the Three Best Rated Award and the Consumer Choice Award.
Steve is passionate about justice, legal framework, property, and public safety issues. Although Steve is in his rookie term as an MLA, he has already led on many political files. He lead the Official Opposition during the Bill 7 Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act legislative debate when the NDP was trying to introduce non-democratic legislation; he forced the governing NDP to adopt some important policy action items in BC’s extortion crisis, such as a multi lingual tip line, awareness campaign, and the BC Extortion Task force; Steve introduced an anti-drug bill, the Drug Use Prevention Education In Schools Act which received International attention; and Steve has been one of the most fierce advocates for private property representing his Richmond constituents and British Columbians following the Cowichan decision.
Before entering politics, Steve gave back to the legal profession and his community. He gave back to the legal profession by mentoring countless aspiring lawyers in the community and by formally taking on many articled students through the Law Society of British Columbia Admissions Program.
Steve also gave back to the broader community by helping countless organizations connect and raise awareness. Steve also regularly engaged in public speaking at events held by community organizations. Steve spoke at community events of various sizes, ranging from a few people in a conference room to massive crowds in an arena. In 2023, Steve was awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award for his significant contribution to the community. Also in 2023, Steve was named an Ambassador to a BCHL Junior Hockey Club.
Steve was born in Vancouver and grew up in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Steve was born into an iconic music family, as Steve’s father is a former star Punjabi recording artist who recorded with EMI and had many hit songs in the 1980s. As a child, Steve’s parents taught him the value of hard work and generous giving. In line with this thinking, Steve enrolled in Taekwondo and earned a black belt at age 11. Steve spent a lot of time with his dad as a child, learning about the music industry in the community.
